Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country, dates back to the twelfth century and is today a model of urban design. Its medieval quarter and historic buildings are in a perfect state of conservation, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria, from which the city’s oldest streets fan out – streets like Cuchilleria, Herreria, Correria, and so on. As one strolls around, it is easy to come across the most significant renaissance palaces in the city.
Furthermore, Vitoria can boast an intense cultural life, the most well-known international event being the Jazz Festival. In addition, its gastronomy, with years of tradition behind it, bases its recipes on fresh garden produce.
The entire province of Vitoria (Alava) has an enormously rich natural heritage. This can be evidenced by visiting protected nature reserves, such as Valderejo or Izki parks and the Gorbeia Area, which is regarded as one of the main natural tourist attractions in the Basque Country.
