An old quarter just for pedestrians makes strolling around Oviedo a pleasure, whether it is from the University to the Cathedral or from the palace of the Marquis of Saint Felix to the Camposagrado. The tower of Oviedo’s cathedral marks the starting point for any tour of the provincial capital. In the cathedral surroundings we can see samples of some of Oviedo’s most important buildings, such as the church of San Tirso, the Fine Arts Museum, or the Archaeological Museum, these latter two housed in the former Velarde Palace and the convent of San Vicente.
Oviedo, located in the centre of Asturias, provides easy access to the entire province via a variety of routes. Eastern Asturias boasts fishing villages such as Lastres and summer resorts with a strong historic flavour such as Ribadesella and Llanes, on the so-called Costa Verde (Green Coast).
Oviedo, and Asturias in general, are also outstanding for their gastronomy, which must include Asturian fabes (haricot beans) as well as the most typical and best-known drink, cider, and it is possible to do a cider route with a tour of the Nalon and Caudal valleys.
The city of Oviedo is well prepared to cater for corporate and business tourism. It has the Municipal Congress Office, a public organization that was created with the aim of promoting the city as a centre for national and international meetings. The Asturian capital’s other major strong point is the Auditorium-Palace of Congresses, which since its opening, has meant a before and after for the hotel sector.
